My mom always said that not anyone can set the songs of their heart to music, but anyone can set them down on paper. That's poetry, and it's been around since we painted bison and horses on cave walls. That said, poetry's not dead; it's pretty damn immortal (well, it'll hang around as long as our species does).
Re: the inaugural poem– Blanco is no Frost, but then, isn't that the point? Yes, One Today could've been shorter (quite a bit. Ahem), but it's Blanco's voice, experience, and his understanding, shared. Our varied interpretations may yet grant the work the longevity owned by The Gift Outright (which, though finely crafted, is arrogant and completely ignores who America belonged to before all those Europeans got there).
