I've debated whether to blog about this weekend's Hugo nominations. Given the amount of ink that's been spilled already, adding more, especially at this stage, may be unwise. But as a Hugo nominator/voter, I am tangentially involved in this. So, here we go.

( Cut to spare those of you with no interest in the Hugos and science fiction inside baseball, or who cannot take any more of this. I understand. )

comments

Counter protesting the protest

This has been up all over, but I still think it deserves still more coverage. So, I add.

To sum up, Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church headed to Comic-Con to protest, you know, all that rockin' gay stuff and idol worshipping there. (Or so I am told. Apparently Angelina Jolie will be making an appearance, so, you know, the idol worshipping stuff is probably not too far off.) It was, you must admit, a plan of near genius, failing to account for one minor, minor, tiny detail:

Cosplayers.

Here's some more video.

(incidentally, some reports are claiming that the church was initially planning to protest Al Gore, couldn't for whatever reason (I sympathize. San Diego can be confusing!) so headed over to protest Comic-Con instead.)

comments
