Since everyone else seems to be chatting about it....
I've only seen it twice. I think this is very courageous, brave, and self-denying of me. :: cough :: Actually, the only reason I saw it a second time is because SP was over last night. He had never even heard of the books -- yes, yes, people like that do live in the world -- so I decided to show him the preview. (He loved it.) And that'll be about it until I get a chance to watch the series, which may not be for awhile.
Anyway, some quick thoughts, cut for those of you that don't care or really don't want to be spoiled.
1) Hands down the most impressive scene, to all of us, was the bit where the Rangers come out of the tunnel and see the Wall. Even on my brother's small computer screen, the initial reaction from all three of us was, "Wow." If they can pull off similar bits later, this show will do well.
2) The Others -- didn't really look like what I expected. I thought they would look snowier and less generic looking, if that makes sense. But the girl with the glowing blue eyes was just marvelously creepy, and kudos to whoever had the idea of arranging the bodies into a sigil shape.
3) Catelyn Tully also doesn't really sound or look the way she does in my head. I will adjust.
4) Against that, though, Arya and Bran do look pretty much the way I pictured them, and I predict that at least in the first season, Arya will be stealing the show. Awesome bit with the bow.
5) Thank you, whoever made the decision NOT to include Theon kicking away the head after the execution. Theon is unlikeable enough even without that and I have no doubt that will be made fairly clear soon enough.
6) Speaking of Theon, although I figured out who Jon, Robb and Theon were, I must say, I hope HBO adds a bit more dialogue there because otherwise, it's three very similar looking guys with similar looking beards all standing around. I realize that Jon will be taking off soon but hopefully they will do more to distinguish Theon and Rob, beyond, oh, yeah, Rob puts his hand on his brother's shoulder and Theon doesn't.
7) I loved it, but, you know, I'm kinda the built in audience for it. What impressed me more was that SP also loved it and immediately decided that he wanted to see the full episode. This bodes well for the series - I wasn't at all sure how well someone who hadn't read the books would be able to catch on or get involved in the series, but he wants to see a lot more of the Wall and the little girl shooting arrows. I just grinned at him.
