marinessI've been meaning to link to the Forbes list of the 15 wealthiest fictional characters earlier, mostly because I vehemently, but vehemently, disagree with it: no WAY is Carlisle Cullen wealthier than Smaug. I mean, NO WAY. I realize some of you are going to take this as just another example of my pro-Tolkien/anti-Meyer bias, but come on. Remember, the mithril shirt that Bilbo took and gave to Frodo, which was worth more than the Shire and everything in it, was only one tiny item of his horde. We are talking a dragon here, folks. SMAUG WINS. Well, financially.
As if to answer my complaint, Forbes actually took a moment to explain how they calculated Smaug's wealth (warning: the calculation is, believe it or not, even geekier than my entire post) but, sorry, Forbes. I'm just not buying it. (Plus, I'm pretty sure that the entry for Artemis Fowl – also listed as wealthier than Smaug – counts as cheating.)
