Pretty much -- that and the get-the-story-at-any-cost nature of the competitive newspaper business in the nineteen-twenties. But what's always struck me was the way that, in the original, the thwarting of the conventional heterosexual romantic relationship was presented as a good thing, which is pretty much counter to the standard plot.

It's kind of a pity, really, that the old-school print newspaper business is pretty much in terminal decline, because I think the world is finally ready for an overtly slashy staging of the original play.
