Castle

The fall TV season just started, and I'm already behind, having seen exactly one – 1 – fall show so far, Castle. In part, this is because, alas, however much I may feel tempted by the thought of watching Daniel Dae Kim in yet another show set in Hawai'i, I wasn't sure if I could actually face Hawai'i Five-O in whatever decade it might be set. In part this is because I have watched you, my friends and the greater internet, respond to the Event with a great big, "Eh," which did not inspire me to rush over to Hulu.com to watch.

We'll see what happens as the week and season progresses, but given that I'd still like to catch up with, um, Warehouse 13, I'm thinking that this may be a harbinger of the rest of the TV season, with the possible exception of Fringe. Possible.

Anyway, Castle: :

Castle is one of my guilty pleasures – it's never been a great show, but it's been fairly consistently amusing, and the chemistry between the leads is great, and the supporting cast has been generally strong as well. The mysteries…vary…but I can live with that, and the dialogue makes it all great fun.

I thought, however, that the show wrote itself into a bit of a corner at the end of last season, with the introduction of the romantic rival and the re-introduction of Castle's ex-wife, Gina. Partly because I have become a little wearied with the now predictable ways of Keeping Destined Couples Apart, and mostly because, in the context of this show, I groaned, and said, oh, man, this is going to result in awkward/irritatingly coincidental meetups, isn't it?

Which is pretty much exactly what happened, leaving us with an episode with improbable coincidences (Beckett just happens to be investigating the murder of a sculptor who just happens to have sold a couple of works to Castle, sigh) and far far too much time spent on "Why didn't you call me over the summer?" repartee/explanation/apologies, taking valuable time away from, well, the murder. As a result, although the murder was easy enough to follow, I was left with the impression that this was the least amount of screen time given to the murderers of any episode of the show. I may be wrong – but it just felt that way.

Other character moments felt shortchanged too.

Don't get me wrong – the show was still charming, I still like all the characters, and I'm not giving up on it. But it's an excellent example of what can happen if you put drama in solely for the sake of drama: you might well get some fun moments out of it, but you may well be paying in quality later. Hoping that the rest of the season bodes better than this.

Also, I see Beckett still likes to wear high heels to crime scenes. Oh, Hollywood.
