Fringe decided to open the season with something different: instead of, "how can we make our viewers toss their dinners this week," they went with…a taxi ride.
I must say, I rather liked the direction this episode took, leaving viewers (well, me) wondering if Olivia has really lost her real memories and self, or if she's just playing along (I'm betting on the just playing along) with the help of some of those added memories, especially since she's realized she won't be heading back to her own timeline anytime soon. And kudos to the writers for their timing of the Olivia/Peter relationship start, since that will allow Peter (I'm assuming) to attribute any changes in AltOlivia (like the whole cheerfulness thing) to wow, I'm so hot, I can even make Olivia cheerful. I can so see Pacey do this. I also really liked the taxi cab driver – I'm assuming, based on the final shot of him, that he'll be returning in at least some future episodes, which, awesome.
It just all goes to show that this show should spend considerably less time chatting about science, and more time with stuff like this. Bonus: No cow. I can only hope that's an omen for the season.
