Me, with pleased surprise at seeing an acquaintance: Hey you!
Acquaintance: Hey! Been run over by any more trucks lately?
Me: Nope. The new policy of truck avoidance is working well.
Ace's cashier…..: What?
Acquaintance: Yeah, she and her trike got run over by a semi.
Ace's cashier: Where?
Me: That horrible State Road 50 intersection at –
Ace's cashier: Oh, yeah. That one. When was this?
Me: Oh, over a year ago now. He just likes bringing it up.
Ace's cashier, looking at the cane: Oh my god. And you still aren't healed?
Me, suddenly realizing what she was thinking: Oh, this? No, this is unrelated.
After leaving the store I realized that it wasn't quite as unrelated as all that, but I am amused by how many people hear the truck story and assume that is why I use a wheelchair/cane, rather than realizing that it was quite the other way around: I wouldn't have been on the trike without that wheelchair/cane.
