Head thunk

Usually, I'm all about the post office.

This is not a usually.

So, early last week I was informed that I would be getting a certified letter containing a check. This is always a plus, so, I checked, we estimated that the letter would arrive Friday or Monday, so I hung around, waiting to sign for it. The tracking information for a considerably less important package (a Christmas present) also informed me that this package was out for delivery, November 21, 2011, 8:22 am. (Yay internet. Usually.) So, all happy, I waited by the door, and watched as the post office guy drove up, stuffed some things in the mailbox, and continued on.

Oh well, no check. But, package, right?

So I headed out to the mailbox to find:

1) Rather odd offers for credit cards (my credit rating sucks; no one should be offering me a platinum card of any kind)

2) The usual bills

3) Catalogs

4) No package

5) A pink slip for the certified letter saying "Sorry We Missed You!"

Sorry we missed you? You didn't even come to the door!

But far more problematic was the back of the slip, which told me that to pick up the certified letter, I have to go to the Colonial Drive office -- AKA the State Road 50 office, AKA the only one of the three nearby post offices that I cannot reach on my own.

Sigh. So, now I'm on hold with the Post Office redelivery service...

If I order a package that is shipped USPS, I get it sent to my husband's work, because our postal carrier will just stick the "sorry I missed you LOL!!!" slip into the mailbox without trying the door AT ALL. Every time. When they bother to use the slip at all, sometimes they just don't do ANYTHING and I call up the post office a week after my thing was supposed to be delivered trying to figure out where the hell it is, and it's somewhere at the facility but only a manager can find it, and whoops! THERE ARE NO MANAGERS!

Wow. Is there, perhaps, a reason the USPS has been failing for as long as it has been? I know the recent crisis is sparked by some bullshittery outside their control, but still.
