I stayed in last night with plenty of excellent cheese (an indulgence on multiple levels, but hey, it was the end of the year), some rather less excellent DVDs and some sparklers.

As I may have mentioned last year, my neighbors are rather enthusiastic about the fireworks, and this year was no exception, with fireworks starting up around 6:20 in the evening and continuing until about 4 am. (In related news, today, I am out of it.) This in turn led to a shaking and whimpering little Grey One who ended up slithering under covers and pillows, making them shake as well, and an only slightly less unhappy Little One who was convinced that he needed cheese to deal with it all.

Just before midnight I headed out with my sparklers to sit on the driveway. I didn't need a countdown -- the street went nuts at the appropriate time, with nearly every house sending something off. (I decided my sparklers counted.) I love sparklers, and since I'm now a grownup I can light as many as I want, so I lit more, just as firetrucks rushed screaming down the cross street, followed by more firetrucks.

That seemed like an impressively quick response to a fire started by fireworks, so I'll go ahead and note that the house fire in question, two blocks away, was actually a kitchen fire and was soon put out with no injuries and just a significant amount of noise.

But the best part of this? The way everyone continued to merrily shoot up fireworks even with a house fire and firetrucks just two blocks away. Impressive fireworks, too.

More holiday updates probably coming when I am slightly more alert.
