I just had to ban 25 people for posting links to Russian porn on my Lj.
What I don't get is why they are resorting to spamming my not-exactly top ten internet site with this. Surely it shouldn't be that difficult to find customers for porn?
They're not looking for customers, they're looking to up their google ranks by getting more recorded links on various sites to their site. Comment spam isn't about attracting hits, it's about messing with search rankings.
But since most people doing a websearch generally don't go past the first page or two of results they want to be as high in the search results as possible. (also sorry if that sounded condescending, a lot of people I know assume that comments left on blogs/forums/etc are looking for click throughs.) I had to tinker with my LJ comments settings because I was getting so much spam, and I've had to leave a few communities because the porn spam is getting awful and there's no way for anyone not a moderator to report it easily. (you have to, IIRC, contact the moderator and have them mark it as spam/report it.)
Uh, not sure if I went into this here before, but I have friends that work in search engine optimization, I've previously worked as a web content editor, and I've occasionally done some freelancing here and there with SEO stuff. I also previously worked as an internet investigator looking for illegal pharmaceutical sites. I know the system, and I also know that the general reason to up your Google ranks is for more customers. Thus my initial question.
Porn and pharmaceutical comment spam by the way does not always work the same way as SEO spam precisely because some of these sites are hiding/moving.
And now I'm kinda hoping I'm not sounding condescending -- sorry, but this is the second conversation of the day that has focused on a field I used to work in.
