I sniffled. Especially during the first heartbreaking 15 minutes (for those who haven't seen the film, stick around: it gets considerably more cheerful after this, especially once the dogs show up.) Highly recommended. Bonus points for showing a highly correct and praiseworthy attitude towards squirrels.

Two small quibbles, perhaps: the original explorer, Muntz, should be incredibly old at this point, since he was in his 30s when the now 70 something Carl was nine or 10, and who precisely was taking all of those pictures that Ellie pasted into her Adventure book for Carl?

I have an answer for both: magic.

After all, both happen in a film that asks us to believe that helium balloons can lift a house up into the sky, and that later, an old man would be strong enough to guide that house – against the wind and the balloons, while dealing with a giant chocolate loving bird – through a wilderness. So. Magic kept Muntz alive; magic took the pictures, and magic healed the bird rather faster than might have been expected.

(I believed the instant love of the dog, though. And in his squirrel fixation. And the bird's obsession with chocolate. Ok, so, my love of this film isn't difficult to understand.)
